Graduate Student Scholarship

• Objective:

IASMiRT is starting a process to bestow stipend scholarship to students completing their graduate studies and/or post-doctoral fellows in research areas and/or fields of practice directly related to SMiRT and submitting papers to the conference. A candidate for the scholarship must be: (a) a graduate student at applicable research program in a recognized university or research center, (b) the first author of the paper, (c) the presenter of the paper at the conference, and (d) endorsed via the candidate supervisor(s).

Three ranked candidates are selected from the pool of submitted and presented papers. Winners of the IASMiRT Stipend are eligible for the Heki Shibata Early Career Award.

• Eligibility:

To be eligible for the scholarship, participants must self-nominate themselves when abstracts are submitted. Therefore, authors need to indicate on the portal if they want their paper to be considered for the Graduate Student Scholarship. A participant must submit the following:

  • A proof of student/post-doctoral status, e.g., Student ID or a letter from University Registrar,
  • An endorsement letter from the student’s or fellow’s supervisor(s), and
  • A letter of interest describing the motives for pursuing technical research in the nuclear industry and/or in the field of structural mechanics in reactor technology.

Heki Shibata Early Career Award

• Objective:

In recognition of Dr. Heki Shibata’s significant contributions to the nuclear industry, and to identify and recognize outstanding work of young and early career professionals, IASMiRT bestows this award to the author(s) of the best three submitted and presented technical paper by early career participants. An early career professional must be: (a) the first author of the paper, (b) the presenter of the paper at the conference, and (c) earned his/her bachelor’s degree within the last 10 years.

Three ranked papers are selected from the pool of submitted and presented papers. The awards are free conference registration at the next SMiRT conference and US$ 1000 for the winner, and US$ 500 and US$ 250 for the second and third runners up, respectively.

• Eligibility:

To be eligible for the award, participants must self-nominate themselves when abstracts are submitted. Therefore, authors need to indicate on the portal if they want their paper to be considered for the Heki Shibata Early Career Award.

Robert Kennedy Award

• Objective:

In recognition of Dr. Robert Kennedy’s significant contributions to the nuclear industry, IASMiRT bestows this award to the author(s) of the best submitted technical paper on subjects related to Dr. Kennedy’s field of practice:

  • Probabilistic and deterministic characterization of external hazards,
  • Modelling and response analysis of structures, systems, and components including experimental and analytical approaches,
  • Characterization of Design Basis and Beyond Design Basis considerations in Design Codes & Standards and in Regulatory documents, and
  • Probabilistic methods to improve design, operation, and safety. Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) and margin assessment. Development of risk-informed and performance-based approaches and risk-based and performance-based regulations, codes, and standards.

One single paper is selected from the pool of submitted papers.
